Samsung Presents Five Reasons to Celebrate with its New Line-up of Mobile Phone Treats

Samsung Electronics today introduced its refreshed mobile phone line-up to kick off 2009, offering consumers more ways and more reasons to celebrate the Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day with their loved ones.

The five new mobile phone treats include the i7110, a Symbian-based mobile phone embedded with a five-megapixel camera, the D980, Samsung’s latest full touch screen dual-SIM phone, designed for business travellers on the go and the refreshed Ultra Messaging i780 smartphone, now equipped with the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional to give users greater efficiency and compatibility with their desktop functions. Samsung today also introduced the highly popular Samsung Omnia in festive red and the Samsung Pixon in pink, providing users with more choices to express themselves.

Made to Move: i7110

The i7110 is Samsung’s latest Symbian-based smartphone that promises to deliver on both business and imaging capabilities. Equipped with a five-megapixel camera, the slim 12.9mm gadget features advanced imaging functions such as Auto-Focus, Smile Shot, Blink Shot and an LED flash, as well as a secondary VGA camera for video conferencing calls on the move. Its amazing 2.6 inch AMOLED screen delivers a superior viewing experience with more vivid colours and higher contrast, while an FM transmitter provides additional listening pleasure.

Users will also be able to stay constantly connected with GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and HSDPA connectivity options on the i7110.

The i7110 will be available in January 2009 at a recommended retail price of $728 without contract.

Double Happiness: D980

Designed for the businessman on the go, the full touch screen D980 allows users to switch between two mobile lines with ease, according to their needs and access to networks in different countries. The large 1200mA battery also allows the phone to access dual roaming without running the risk of depleting battery life (7 hours talktime, 320 hours standby). Equipped with handwritten Chinese character recognition, the D980 makes it easy for users to send out messages in Chinese characters.

Beyond giving users access to dual SIM cards, the D980 also satisfies the consumer’s needs for multimedia entertainment with multi-format music and video support, as well as a five megapixel camera onboard. The TouchWiz user interface on the D980 streamlines navigation for an enjoyable experience.

The D980 is currently available at a recommended retail price of S$728 without contract.

Festive in Red: Samsung

Encased in a stylish ultra-slim 12.5mm metallic chassis, the Samsung is based on the latest Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system, giving users access to Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word on the go. Rounding out the fully comprehensive feature set, Samsung also offers GPS, including navigation and geo-tagging capabilities, so users can get their bearings wherever work or life takes them.

The Samsung also satisfies the user’s need for dynamic mobile entertainment features. A wide 3.2 inch WQVGA LCD screen allows users to view photos and videos in high resolution while multi-codec support for various formats, such as DivX and Xvid, allows users to watch videos in different formats, without having to convert them. The five-megapixel CMOS camera onboard the Samsung features digital camera functions such as Auto-Focus (AF), Face and Smile Detection, and Auto-Panorama shot to help users capture life’s best moments in high quality on their mobile phones. Combined with a massive internal memory of 16GB, which is further expandable by using MicroSD cards, the Samsung is your mobile digital entertainment library, allowing you to enjoy your music, videos and images everywhere you go.

The 8GB Samsung will be available in red from end January 2009 at a recommended retail price of $828 without contract.

Souped Up: Ultra Messaging i780

The i780 is the business professional’s best companion yet. Equipped with touch screen capabilities, an optical joystick and a full QWERTY keyboard, the i780 gives users a superior navigational experience on one smart, slim device. Now refreshed with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the Office Mobile device allows users to edit their documents efficiently. With both HSDPA and WiFi connectivity options, users can stay connected wherever they go. The GPS system on the i780 also ensures that users never get lost and reach their destinations with ease.

Current users of the i780 can also upgrade their software at all Samsung Service Centres effective immediately. Users are advised to back up all data on their desktops before sending their i780 for the upgrade.

The refreshed Ultra Messaging i780 will be available from end January 2009 at a recommended retail price of S$498 without contract.

Pretty in Pink: Samsung Pixon

June of 2009 Brings Google Android Samsung Phone

June of 2009 Brings Google Android Samsung Phone

June of 2009 Brings Google Android Samsung Phone

The HTC-sourced T-Mobile G1 currently enjoys a monopoly on the Android smartphone market, but that’s quickly changing.

In fact, Samsung is joining in on the Google fun by issuing an Android-powered smartphone to Sprint and T-Mobile some time next year.

Nothing has been 100% confirmed just yet, of course, but word is that Samsung is hard at work producing an Android-powered smartphone and it may even be on display at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next year. If I’m lucky, they may have an early prototype in Las Vegas for CES next month, but that’s probably pretty unlikely.

As it stands, the yet-unnamed Samsung Android phone will be based largely on the Samsung Instinct and the Samsung Omnia, meaning that it will likely lack the physical QWERTY keyboard found on the T-Mobile G1. This seems to be the trend for Android phones, as some of the other Android phones in development from other firms are taking this iPhone-like approach as well.

New smartphone development 'accelerating'

Android heading to new handsets in '09

Samsung has announced that it is speeding up the development of its own version of an Android-powered handset in order to stay at the sharp end of the mobile phone market.

The company has confirmed it will sell a phone running Google's OS during 2009, which will hardly come as a shock considering the rumours that it and LG have been secretly showing prototypes for months.

"We are accelerating the development process for Google phones in order to meet the specific needs of local carriers," Samsung stated while making statement-like sounds in a statement.

US or them?

The company also confirmed T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel will be carrying the device, although presumably that's only in the US. TechRadar contacted both Samsung and T-Mobile in the UK to find out whether the new Samsung Android phone will follow the G1 onto T-Mobile too and we'll let you know as soon as any more information arises.

Although there still hasn't been a phone to follow the T-Mobile G1 handset onto the UK market sporting Android, there have been a number of handsets mooted and confirmed.

In November 2008, the Kogan Agora was tipped to be the next phone to sport Android, though it appears this handset has now been canned.

Since then, Motorola has announced it will be bringing an Android phone out in 2009 and we've seen prototypes from the likes of Lenovo and Touch Revolution in the last few months. The question now remains: will Samsung beat everyone to the punch and be the second onto the market?
